One of the bigger problems Detroit faces is dumping into the Detroit River. In 2011 the sewer systems discharged over 26 billion gallons of raw or partially treated sewage into the Detroit and Rouge Rivers. Since a lot of the sewage pipes in Detroit are old they have a hard time containing the amout of sewage that goes into them. So much so that in April of 2013 its wastewater treatment plant was beset with 1.5 billion gallons of water a day, well over the 930 million its capable of handling and too much even for the concrete basins designed to contain overflow.Around the same week that this occured Detroit's wastewater managers opened11 pipes and sent 110 million gallons of raw sewage spewing into the Detroit River.
As well in 2010 residents began complaining of a strong smell coming from their basements and sewers. The fumes where so bad that it caused a growth of unknown substances in their furniture.
