Road To Recovery:Detroit has gone through so much involving every aspect of the city, and yet people still believe in it and want to bring it back to life. A common thing that happens in the city is people restoring houses that already stand. People will go to real estate auctions and buy decently large houses for typically around a thousand dollars and will either use their own money or receive grants from outside sources to renovate their new house and then will live in it. This is bringing people back to Detroit because you are able to buy a house for cheap, renovate it, and have their own house for a relatively low cost. This is one step that is helping revitalize Detroit.
Rebirth in Action: |
Jazley Trouser is a 25 year old who lives in Detroit. The city has an online action site where Jazley bit $1000 on a run down four-bedroom Tudor style house from 1929. A community bank, Talmer Bank and Trust, gave her a $25,000 grant to put towards renovating her new house. "I love that this is my home," Trouser said. "I'm creating a home for myself with longevity."
“Civic and business leaders are targeting eight neighborhoods that they determined have the best chance of turning around. To clear out the inventory of vacant houses, the city is moving aggressively to demolish structures that are beyond repair and auction ones that are salvageable. And the community bank that helped Trouser has initiated an effort to sell newly rehabbed houses even if it means taking a loss.” There are people out there that are wanting to do everything in their power to help revitalize the housing situation in Detroit. The bank that granted Jazley her loan is willing to risk losing money in order to recover the city. These are the kind of people who are amazing influences for the city and really care to see it succeed once again. The auctions that the city set up are giving people a chance at owning a home when they might never have seen that a possibility.
For houses that are vacant and too far gone from nature and human wreckage, the city plans on demolishing them but the cost ranges from $12,000-$15,000 which will add up quickly considering how many houses need to be knocked down throughout the entire city. This will help the city come back to live by not looking so run down and inviting more people back in. The problem is the expensive. The city has now had to pick and choose the neighborhoods where they will send the money to knock down houses and reconstruct these neighborhoods. If they can keep this up and make neighborhoods look and feel inviting for people to move back into, they will be able to draw people back into Detroit. This will create a chain reaction to all other aspect of Detroit and will slowly bring the city back to good health. |
