About a century ago, Detroit had a flourishing and prosperous economy. At one point, it was America's fourth largest city. In 1962, Detroit's population was more than 1.5 million. The large population meant more enrollment in colleges and universities and education rates were high.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS
WAYNE STATE:
- Scientists at the University of Medicine developed a non-invasive prenatal genetic test that is proved to be accurate five weeks into pregnancy.
- A professor of physiology and her team at the University of Medicine made an advancement that could lead to treatment for Parkinson's disease.
- Researchers at the university have made progress in helping heal wounds in diabetic corneas.
- The UDM School of Architecture's faculty had an important role in Detroit's "Detroit Future City" project. The project's goal was to help create new planning and development ideas for the city
- The university partnered with Ford Motor Co. to develop projects that would help local businesses and organizations.
- The president of Detroit Mercy has been working to stabilize many communities of Detroit
- The community college offers after school and summer camp opportunities to elementary and high school students
- They host an annual Thanksgiving luncheon for many Detroiters
Based on the achievements and contributions made by theses colleges and universities, it is clear that they have had a positive impact on the communities around them.
